Julius Del Mar was born and (mostly) raised in California. His family moved up and down the West Coast, from Portland, Oregon, to the Los Angeles basin. His early passions included reading and writing fiction and drawing. These were set aside during his schooling to an MD degree, a marriage, a family, the practice of rural family medicine in Northern California, and the subsequent practice of administrative medicine. Eventually, he retired to Southern Oregon, first to a small farm near Phoenix, OR, later to Ashland, OR, and currently to Medford, OR. Here, his early passions have regained a foothold. Between his retirement in 2010 and 2018, he published ten novels on Kindle. Then he took off what he thought would be “a couple of years” to study the art of writing with the goal of improving the quality of his output. His quest lasted through the COVID pandemic. The Newcomers is his first post-pandemic work and Dead on the Water is his second; several more novels are waiting in line for attention.
Julius Del Mar is the “nom de plume” of Roger K Howe, MD, MMM. This nom de plume was adopted at the urging of his extended family when he was a pre-teenager. Julius was his maternal grandfather’s middle name, and Rio Del Mar, California, was where his maternal grandparents lived.
