Lindsey
So Michelle, there’s an invisible layer of wealth and our businesses and we don’t know it.
Michelle
There sure is Lindsey, most entrepreneurs have no idea how much they’re leaving on the table. But more importantly, that it’s right there in order for them to make money off of their their intellectual property off of things they’ve already created. That’s what I really like to help people understand that there is an invisible layer of wealth right there in front of their nose.
Lindsey
And then there’s an invisible layer of impact in their business that they also don’t see.
Michelle
Yes, most entrepreneurs when they feel like they have a big mission, that they’re here to do something to change the world. Maybe they’re here to change the consciousness or spread a specific message. They’re very, understandably so cautious about who they’re giving that message to, to spread in their name. They want to find people that take that message with the same heart and the same seriousness as they do. But actually, there are things that you can put into place to help others spread your message so that you are finding like minded people who can speak with the same authentic voice that you do, and spread your message. And that’s a huge way to impact the whole world. Most people are trying when they feel like they they have a big message. When someone says to me, I know I’m here to change the world, I know I have something big to do. But I have a client base of maybe 100 or 200, or 500 people or I’ve sold 1000 downloadable products, their reach can’t go to the whole world, unless they are starting to work through other people who are helping them spread their message.
Lindsey
It’s like that same place that entrepreneurs get stuck when they do like multi six figures, right? Because they can’t let go. And they can’t trust team. And they can’t build. And so no one talks about it, though no one says hey, here’s the way to get your message out to the masses.
Michelle
Right. And it is just like there are specific tools and tricks when hiring a team, you go through an interview process, maybe you call references, you might have specific assessments that you would do, depending on who you’re hiring, right, maybe give them a task. There are specific tools and tricks that you can also do when empowering others with your voice with your message. And so you just need to know what those tools are, you need to put some structure in place. And then you’ll feel much better about allowing other people to share under your voice under your name, share your message. It is when we think we are afraid what they’re really going to say out there in the world. And are they as passionate as we are? Are they do they have the same voice that we have, that’s when we get scared. And then very often we choose our friends, right? We do that in business too. When we’re hiring, we choose our friends or we choose our relatives because we know we can trust them. The problem with that is they’re not always the right person for the job. So if you need a graphic designer, you hire a graphic designer, you don’t hire your friend from high school who took graphic design in one client don’t right Oh, my gosh, excuse me. So no offense to anyone out there. But you want to get the best person for the job. And so you want the same structure and the same controls in place when you’re choosing people to spread your message. But if you have a messages impacting the world, there are going to be lots of people who are passionate about them, is just putting them through a screen to get the right people with the right authentic voice that you’re looking for that will follow a specific system. And then the world as they say is your oyster. You can really get your message out worldwide.
Lindsey
And you’ve done this multiple times you history. So talk a little bit about that because it’s not like it’s a nice idea that theoretically you could do because like what coach doesn’t want to certify people everyone thinks it’s This fabulous idea. But it’s myths. I mean, how many train wrecks of that have we seen?
Michelle
Yeah, there’s lots of train wrecks. And certifying is is one great way. That’s only one way. But it’s a great way you can certify coaches, you can certify people to spread your message. You can also license you can create intellectual property. In fact, most people have intellectual property, any video, any audio, you’ve done any PDF in a coursework you’ve done, that’s intellectual property, and there are ways that you can create that, to help others put that out into into the world, it’s different from what a buzzword like affiliate marketing might be, or a little bit different than I’ll give you a commission. If you sell it, there’s a little bit more business control around it to make sure that you know, who has access to the materials. And it the cool thing is that when I’ve done this in the past, I’ve really been able to leverage the work the message, the product, the service, so that it can go viral as they say, and go worldwide. So
Lindsey
And so talk about, you’ve done this with multiple companies in the seven figure range. So give us just the sort of so we understand.
Michelle
Yeah, so I’ve worked in the computer industry with this. I’ve worked in the holistic health industry with this, in the holistic health industry. And about a year there were seven figures that was generated just from a licensing product, it was fabulous. And you can license, you can license products, you can license ideas, you can license processes, you can license, intellectual property. And licensing is one what licensing is one way certifying is another way. And so you just want to look at all the different opportunities and choose the best model for you. Because just because it may be certifying coaches has worked for one person that may or may not be the route you want to go. It depends, you know, if you’re certifying coaching, there’s just gonna be a little bit of oversight that needs to happen. And a process may be a school, or maybe some process to make sure that the coaches are certified, and some quality control. And so that’s one way to go. But for somebody else, they may just want to license intellectual property and sit back and take the royalty checks. So talk about that one. Right. Yeah. So if you have products, services, which most people do, or even a process, so if you have a specific process, you can license that and collect a check when other people are using your process. And there’s just some specific controls that you would put into place. So yes, obviously, you have a contract. But there’s some other things, some tricks that I’ve picked up in years of doing this, to help make sure that you know what’s really going on in the marketplace so that you have a feel for who is using your process? And are they really upholding it to the standard that you want? Are they staying in your authentic voice? Making sure that your word your message is being disseminated? How you want it, you know, most of the entrepreneurs I work with feel like they have a real mission? Yeah, absolutely. They’re here on a mission, they want to change the world, they want to change the consciousness, they want to make the world a better place. Lots of holistic practitioners have processes or a system that they train people in. But there could be something as easy as course material, that instead of just selling it, or instead of just sending it out under a commission base, affiliate marketing type of structure, that you could actually license it and make a lot more money
Lindsey
It’s amazing, because I think the other pieces, so there are loads of webinars to sign up for where it’s like license your IP, here’s a way to do it. So we learn all of this stuff that’s sort of downstream, right? But like royalties and stuff like that, like who’s talking about that, so you know how to do those kinds of things.
Michelle
I do know how to do those kinds of things. Now, obviously, you need a lawyer to look at contracts, right? But I have a lawyer in my back pocket and most people can get a lawyer in their back pocket if they don’t have one. But that’s not you tell the lawyer what you want. See, most people think I’ll go to the lawyer, they’ll set all this up for me. They will set it up from a legal perspective. But as an entrepreneur or business owner, you need to know what structure you want and then you give that to the lawyer.
Lindsey
Well, I think it’s also when you talk about an invisible layer of things, doing the marketing are finding multiple people to do that with like, it’s very different than what most entrepreneurs are accustomed to. So looking at things like how to find 10 people, right to pay you for your process is not something that probably people who create process are good at, right? Like, I figured out some new touch something that’s a holistic practitioner thing where I can heal people, and they can walk again, that’s not the same skill set as finding a lawyer, right? Like, you’ve almost lost me then, or finding 10 people, or finding a control to make sure that someone doesn’t rip, you know, like, they’re just so many questions.
Michelle
There’s so many writing parts. Yeah. And especially in the holistic world, and in the coaching world, and in the fields of entrepreneurship, that are really heart based, and people oriented and service oriented. Many of those entrepreneurs are wildly successful, and they just don’t have the time to figure out all the moving pieces, right? They know, I have a system, I have taught this system to my patients or my clients for 20 years. And I know what’s in my head, but I need help. I don’t know how to create this into something that I can sell or license. So it’s just a different skill set, partly, but also partly, they’re just too busy. You just don’t have the time?
Lindsey
Well, I think you know, so we hire the graphic designer, right? We learned not to do it with our best friend, we learned to go to oDesk. Or to our friend who has a great graphic designer, and we learn how to outsource something like that we’re smart about that somebody writes our blogs, somebody you know, cleans our house, right? Right does all of these things. But for licensing, like can somebody else do this? Can you outsource licensing?
Michelle
Well, you can. And that’s certainly what my company does. But also what I recommend is that you don’t just outsource the licensing, you want to look at the whole business, you want to look at the business structure. And where is it that you as an entrepreneur, really want to go? What is your mission here? What information are you really disseminating? Because you can license one product, and you could maybe hire a lawyer for that. And that’s fine. But that’s not really completing your mission here on Earth, Ryder it a little woowoo here for a minute. Yeah, but most of the people that I talk to, they really want to change the world. So we need to look at the whole set of intellectual property, we need to look at everything you’ve been doing for the last few years, we need to really dig deep and figure out which pieces of this should be for certification, which pieces of this should be for licensing, perhaps, maybe some of this is just for resale. Maybe some of it is support material. Maybe you’re creating a new course, maybe maybe not most people already have all the work done. Right. But it’s not just about licensing one thing. Usually it’s about pulling it all together, and going through a specific process to an unveil this layer of wealth hidden in your business, which is what are all the things that you’ve done. And let’s go package that to take it out to the world in a bigger way.
Lindsey
Yeah, I mean, I will say personally, that what I’ve seen is that the people who are really making a lot of not just income, but the people that we really think are super smart, that have a lot of impact everywhere, absolutely have an unseen part of their business that’s doing loads of the stuff that most people would never guess.
Michelle
There are a lot of people that sell processes, or a lot of people that do sort of certifications, and sometimes that’s all pulled together for an end goal. And sometimes it’s haphazard, and until you get in there and really look you don’t know what’s going on. But there’s a lot of successful people doing this or some, some variation of it.
Lindsey
Right? Because at the end of the day, how much money can an entrepreneur make? If everything is dependent upon them? Like, you know, Starbucks, or what’s a company that’s not Starbucks?
Michelle
Like, well, you know, anything, if you it’s so what I’d like to start with is, who is somebody that you really admire in the same business, but ahead of where you are? And usually they’re ahead of where you are, because, quite honestly, they probably make more money, right? They have a bigger business. That’s probably why you think of them being ahead. Right. And so what is it that got them there? They would have had to probably hire some staff, but they also are leveraging themselves. Yeah, and We get stuck in this place, especially people who earn about mid six figures, yes, get stuck in a place where it’s very difficult to leverage yourself. You don’t quite have the cash flow to go hire a whole big team of people, but you can’t do it by yourself anymore. There’s an in between place, and you’ve got to find other ways to leverage yourself to bring in more cash flow to get to the next place. And then if you want to go to seven figures and beyond, then you’re looking at a real solid team to help support that. But there is a sort of this awkward place in between where you, you must leverage you must replicate yourself where you’ll be stuck there.
Lindsey
Yeah, so it sounds to me like, there are three different options here. There’s the option where you get people who do it for you, right? There’s the option where your process or whatever your intellectual property is, brings you profit, and you don’t have to manage all of that huge team of people. Absolutely. And there’s an option just to own the value that you have and the information that you know, like everyone has, right, like we’ve got content creation is usually not the problem, right? But just to have someone else come in and explode that for you. Right?
Michelle
Right. Really look at what you have, and what are all the different ways to market it. What are all the different ways to get it out there and spread your message. And very often it is just taking the content that you already have, and repackaging it, we hear that all the time that you can repackage your content, repurpose, it is a buzzword right now. But more important than that is how do you do that and continue to collect royalties. So you’re not just selling it once for $97, or $997, or whatever the price point is, right? Doesn’t matter. But once you’ve sold it, once it’s done and what we’re, what we look to help entrepreneurs with, is engaging in a processes ongoing. So there’s, you know, there, people talk about making money while you sleep, you know, that sort of, we’ve all heard that. What we’re really looking to do, though, is to build a foundation, so that the cashflow comes in. So you’re really building a business rather than a solo practitioner business, or maybe just being self employed, there’s a step up from being self employed to running a business. And this could be one big piece of it.
Lindsey
Yeah. Well, it’s sort of like a politician, right? Like, if they’re going to run for office, they don’t just assume that they’re gonna go knock on every door, and then the world will know them. They have people to get knowledge about them out there. So I think a lot of entrepreneurs think, well, I’m gonna get on a big stage, and everybody’s gonna know my name. And they focus all their energy there, where if they had somebody doing this for their business, right? You become known.
Michelle
Yeah. And you can at that point, you can have 10 people or 1000 people working for you just like just like a politician. Yeah, good analogy.
Lindsey
It’s brilliant. It’s brilliant. So it’s, it’s mind boggling, right? Because it’s something that no one really talks about, is there anything else that we should know?
Michelle
I think the the piece the the hidden layer piece is we think we have to hire people to do this. We think we have to run a new team, we think we need a lot of, you know, hundreds of 1000s of dollars in lawyers fees to get started. And that’s not really the truth. The truth is you can start at wherever you start, you can unleash 20 things that you’d like to license. So you can start with one. And until you go in and dig in a little bit and look at your goals. You don’t know. But most entrepreneurs have something. Yeah, most entrepreneurs have some.
Lindsey
And if you were to take a hypothetical look at their stuff, I bet you could tell them how much money is there from your experience?
Michelle
Yeah, I could I could look and I could say yes, I see right here that this is worth $100,000, or maybe a million dollars or ongoing over the years, right multimillion dollar.
Lindsey
Because you’ve seen I mean, you shared some of the statistics with me, and it’s amazing. So there have been like, multiple multimillion dollar companies that you’ve done this with, right? Yeah. So if someone is like, oh, my gosh, Michelle, I want you to take a look at my stuff. Like let me know how much money I have there. You’re willing to do that for a few people.
Michelle
I will I will look if you’re serious. And you would like to look at what this next step is. And if it’s even possible in what you have, I’d be happy to go through it with you and see what you have in there. And let’s see if we can find that hidden layer of wealth in your business.
Lindsey
And if it’s not possible
Michelle
I will. So it is possible to some degree for most people, right? But there are people who just have not created content or don’t have their process flushed out yet. And so for those people, I may give them an outline. You need six more months. Do you need a year wherever they are in the process? I would say for entrepreneurs who are mid six figures and above there, they’re gonna have it
Lindsey
Brilliant. I think it’s genius. So people should talk to you.
Michelle
People should talk to me.
Lindsey
Great.
